The Model 844 directly replaced the Model 84 in 1978, as Bersa's .32 caliber offering. As with the rest of the concurrent models, the new pistol no longer a separate recoil spring guide rod, and the now-bigger spring was guided instead by the barrel itself. A hammer-blocking safety was included in the slide, as well as a magazine disconnect safety in the frame.

A designated takedown latch was provided just under the muzzle. Disassembly begins with pressing on the takedown latch (upwards) to allow a full rearward pull on the slide against recoil spring pressure, until the slide leaves frame-rail engagement. The slide is then lifted slightly up and off the frame and frame-rails, and allowed to return forward, until fully off the the frame and the barrel. Removal of the  slide catch and driving out other pins permits further and further disassembly.

Model 844 pistols were marked "Lusber" for the Italian market. The Model 844 was current from 1978 to 1983, when Bersa's third generation of pistols was launched including, in particular, the
.32 ACP Model 323.
